The Port of Huntsville saw many positives to celebrate in 2021. Here are some of our accolades, highlights and recognition received throughout the year:
Governmental Affairs/Planning
HSV received discretionary grant awards totaling $23,288,457 for the purpose of rehabilitating runway 18R/36L and upgrading the HSV security system. Additionally, the COVID-19 relief-related ACRGP grant provided $4,174,365, and the ARPA grant, a 10% match on four HSV projects, added $443,637 to the full grant funding for FY21 of $27,906,459.
Operations
HSV charted at No. 19 in the continental U.S. for international air cargo volume in a report by Airports Council International. For comparison, the top five are Anchorage, Miami, Chicago, Los Angeles and New York.
The City of Huntsville Beautification Board continued recognition of the Port of Huntsville’s Glenn Hearn Entrance, International Intermodal Center Entrance and Signature Flight Support with Beautification Awards.
We completed several major projects in FY21 including the completion of Taxiway “C” construction and fascia/roof renovation project on the Concourse. And because timeliness is important – particularly when waiting on your bags to meet you at baggage claim, HSV achieved an average baggage delivery time of 11.55 minutes.

Huntsville International Airport (HSV), was named one of the Top Ten Small Airports in the US as part of the 2021 USA Today 10Best Readers’ Choice Travel Awards. We were the only airport in in Alabama to have secured a spot in the contest.
Nominees were chosen by a panel of experts that included editors from USA Today, editors from 10Best.com, expert contributors, and sources from other Gannett media properties. Finalists were chosen by an online public vote that took place over the course of four weeks.
“We are ecstatic that Huntsville International Airport has been chosen by voters as one of North America’s best small airports for USA Today’s 10 Best Readers’ Choice awards,” said Rick Tucker, Chief Executive Officer, Huntsville International Airport. “Our team works each and every day to provide excellent service to passengers, but we also work to represent this region well so that a visitor’s experience will reflect positively on the state of Alabama as a whole. We are so grateful to our community for supporting HSV by voting. We share this honor with them and will continue to work hard to provide North Alabama and Southern Tennessee residents with even more great options at their local airport.”
