Chairman/ CEO Letter

Over fiscal year 2021, Huntsville International Airport experienced the full brunt of the COVID-19 pandemic. We began to understand in July 2020 the devastating effects that the virus was having, not just on our community’s population but also the economic impact that would come to bear on our businesses.

Passenger traffic began its prolonged path to recovery after a near shutdown in spring 2020, and the  path was uncertain. But HSV took heart in the return of passengers to the skies. To allay travelers’ fears and safeguard their health, airlines and airports implemented disinfection and distancing plans, many of these in excess of CDC guidelines for safe travel. Midway through the fiscal year, the miracle of the vaccine brought relief to many, and we began to see more passengers through our gates. All through this long journey, HSV kept three priorities at the forefront of our operations: 1) to keep passengers, employees and tenants safe; 2) to ensure continuity of operations; and 3) to preserve jobs.

We are proud to present this annual report and highlight the many accomplishments our team achieved in FY21. There is much to celebrate at Huntsville International Airport, the International Intermodal Center and Jetplex Industrial Park. Even as the second year of the pandemic brought uncertainty, one thing remains certain: Huntsville International is equipped to rise to the challenge, and in our challenges, we envision opportunity.

It was during this year that we released a new Master Plan, mapping plans for expansion and upgrades to our infrastructure for the next half century. HSV led Alabama’s six major commercial service airports in economic impact. We welcomed new routes, a brand new airline, and new cargo service. And HSV was selected as one of just five FAA Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS) research and test sites in the nation.

Ongoing strategic initiatives have resulted in continued growth in our industrial park, while national recognition as the 19th largest international air cargo airport in the continental United States ensures that the Port of Huntsville has earned its place among the elite in the global logistics marketplace.

It is with renewed optimism that we press into FY22 with a mission to uphold the high standard with which we have been entrusted: To provide quality, multi-modal transportation services to a diverse regional customer base and to stimulate the economic growth and development of the Tennessee Valley Region. We thank you for your continued support of the Port of Huntsville as we serve this great region.
